Incredibly powerful visualizations of the 2008 election results based on population and electoral college votes.
Cartograms of 2008 Presidential Election
The final map showing a gradient of the vote across the country is perhaps the most informative - we've been trained by the media to think of things as red or blue and to store a purely geographic map of the country in our heads so it is amazing to see an almost-organic looking view of the election.
Unlikely we'd ever see these on Fox News - doesn't really fit their world view. Actually, it's unlikely we'd see it on the most left leaning media either since they show that while the background of the country is now basically blue, there are large parts of the country which split the difference (e.g. suburbia).
I suppose it betrays my bias to admit that the first thing that came to mind when I saw the final map was that the red looked like a metastatic tumor that had thankfully shrunk significantly since 2004.
